The concept of fit

OrgCon considers four types fits (misfits respectively):

There are many synonyms for the terms 'fit' and 'misfit':
'fit' : congruency, matching, balance, compatibility, and complementary are synonyms.
'misfit' : incongruency, misalignment, out of kilter, incompatibility, and a gap. All the terms for misfit suggest that the situation or condition requires attention and change to realize better performance for the organization.

In other words, an organization that performs well has fewer major misfits than an organization that has numerous misfits. The notion of fit suggests that the organization is structured and positioned to do well, and is efficient and effective in its activities. Misfit is deviation from ideal fit.

Misfits are not necessarily bad. Periodic misfits appear or are created as natural consequences of restructuring, mergers, strategic changes etc. and are therefore necessary in order to ensure the long-term development of a company. The importance of misfits should therefore be seen in a dynamic perspective. Misfits probably do not have immediate economic consequences for a company, but, if not resolved, misfits are expected to affect the economic result in the long term. When a necessary misfit occurs, a new balance between the other factors should be established. Companies undergoing a strategic development pass through various phases of emerged and/or created misfits and subsequent adjustments.
