This summarizes the findings from the sub-analyses in a comparison based on contingency factors. Each misfit is an unbalanced situation among the findings of the sub-analyses. If there are misfits, can or should they be removed? If so, how?

Contingency misfit

Identifies the situational factors that are not in alignment with the organizational structure.

Size

Categorizes the organization as small, medium, or large.

Climate

Charaterizes the attitudes and behavior of the people in the organization.

Management style

Characterizes management's level of micro involvement in decision-making.

Strategy

Assigns the organizational strategy to one of the Miles and Snow strategy categories.

Current organizational characteristics

  • Centralization characterizes the degree of direct involvement that top management has in gathering and interpreting the information used for their decision-making, together with their control over the execution of those decisions. 
  • Formalization characterizes the rules in an organization and the ability to obtain a standardized behavior of its members.
  • Complexity summarizes the degree of coordination needed and the information processing capabilities in the organization. Factors influencing the complexity are the number of hierarchical levels and the number of locations of facilities and personnel including the variety of tasks in the organization
