Vertical differentiation relates to the depth of the hierarchy, i.e. the number of levels from top-management to the operational employees.
In organizations, the level of hierarchy may be deeper in one area, division or sub-unit than in another.

Measures of vertical differentiation are:

• Number of vertical levels in the deepest unit
• Average number of levels for the organization as a whole
