How to use OrgCon as a student
Learn by doing --- the best approach is simply to jump in and do it! Don't worry about definitions and technical terms initially; use your intuition and best judgment; guess and experiment. Start by using OrgCon to complement your readings; explore the relationships between the factors affecting organization design. See how easily you will grasp the complexity of organization design factors relationships.
Use your preferred manual or textbook and identify the list of factors to consider in organization design, then compare your textbook factors with those in the software. Discover the questions to ask in order to assess the key factors in an OrgCon analysis.
Enter the inputs for an organization you know well (past work, summer job, volunteer work, associations, friend or family business). For this experimental run, enter the input data as best you can. Again, don't worry about definitions and technical terms; just use best guesses. Run the analysis and then look through the output recommendations. What did you know intuitively? What surprises are there?
Consider the analysis you have conducted more closely. What might be different.
What if the environment were more uncertain? What are the implications for decentralization? What if the climate had low resistance to change? What would this mean for the formalization? Does OrgCon affirm your intuition about the results obtained from your best guesses? What if it does not?
Obtain more depth of understanding about organizational design factors by referring to the OrgCon help, looking at books on organizational design and by doing "what if" experimentation. Have fun with this new tool; it is a whole new way to learn about organizational design, its concepts, and its real world application.
